THE IDEA OF INDIA

     1.  What is India?

How silly, Its our country; It is situated in the south asian region, surrounded by Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka & the Indian Ocean.

     2.  Then who is Indian?

Everyone who lives in India are Indians, simple!

     3.  Why should we take pride in being Indians?

Is it like that, we have traveled the whole of world & find India to be the best country and then applied to God that in my next birth, please let me born in India. And thats why we are so proud of. Certainly not.So why do we defend India; why should we be proud of ? For just we are born in this geographical unit?

Now the question is if we were born on the other side of the border, wouldn’t we be equally proud for being a PAKISTANI,NEPALI or BANGLADESHI?  We could even take another example, Jharkhandi or Chhatishgarhi people feel proud to belong to their respective states; and bury their feeling of pride for being Bihari or MPwala, what they were earlier!

So is it all, our Nationalism is just like taking side of an IPL team? If not then what? Now you’ll say about The Indus Valley Civilization, The Vedas, Magadh,Mughals and many such things. So does India then(in geographical sense only) is same as that of today? Umm, we are missing the point. Still it is because of our birth in this land, over which we had no control.

So as thinking creatures should we be restricted to this only? Or we should consider India as an Idea. Now here comes the Ideal INDIA or the Idea of India. Now for this version of India(2.0), we must subscribe to that idea to be Indians, and who don’t follow it may not be called as Indians. Even we could find a lot of Non-Indians in India & conversely many Indians outside of India. Then we might get some real reason to feel proud of INDIA.

In a speech at RRCEE, Central University of Delhi, Dr Yogendra Yadav  mentioned 2 basic supports on which the idea of India stands. They are

  • Democracy
  • Diversity

These three things make India stand tall at global arena and that could be the precise terms to define India. We need to feel proud of these to be called as real Indians.

DEMOCRACY though originated in ancient Greece(as it is taught), India changed the world view, when it decided to allow its uneducated vast population to participate in elections in 1952. Then it was believed to fail the sooner or later, but proving everyone wrong, Indian democracy has survived 70 long years and made it self  stronger year after year. Hence it is a basic feature of IDEA OF INDIA.

UNITY in DIVERSITY as we hear and say since childhood is another feature exclusive to India. We are the unique example of coexistence; where so people of so many diverse religion, culture, ethnicity, language live together. Does any other country come to your mind? Except India others have some kind of restriction or the other(like English language in the USA). Our history might say some culture/religion/language/ethnicity invasive but what is present now is INDIA;with this reality we have to live. Here I want to mention about the about the organisations who try to homogenize India (via propaganda of religious superiority of Hinduism & Hindi as the National Language) are actually acting against it. It is India not Europe where every country has its specific language, culture &  ethnicity; see in Sri Lanka Sinhalese tried to force the superiority of Sinhalese Language & Culture and it lead them to a deadly four decade civil war. By narrowing our view actually we are leading to India’s fragmentation. Hence Only in Diversity lies India’s UNITY.

In conclusion I would like to suggest every Patriot/ Nationalist to question every action of government, do they comply with the idea of India? Are they upkeeping the Unity of India? For if we think not asking govt is patriotism then we put to risk either DEMOCRACY or DIVERSITY. Deshhakti is not altogether different than the religious Bhakti(or say Bhakti Movement); In Bhakti, a devotee could question, scold, intimate, inform, abuse and all with the God. God becomes friend; similarly if we don’t consider our nation as our friend its worthless like worshiping a piece of stone or wood. In Bhakti one  reserves right to his/her God the same is with Nation too.

Until my next post

Nation, Nationalism & Nationalists

I am wondering if my eyes are bigger than my stomach!

The topic of nationalism is so huge that I fear i could even touch every corner; yet I’ll try to put some of the most important points, I think must be discussed in Indian context, on the table.

So lets start with NATION. I guarantee most of India citizen confuse between country, nation & state. Though we use one or the other word for our beloved India time to time; it has some differences.

  • COUNTRY is a geographical entity
  • STATE is a political entity and
  • NATION is a cultural entity

Yes yes I understand what you are going to say, & my answer is obviously INDIA is a geographical, political and cultural entity at the same time. BUT don’t we miss the the linguistic, ethnic and regional identities? Aren’t they building blocks of culture? So are not they Nations?

Yes, in the language of Political Science they are, e.g Odia Nationalism, Bengali nationalism, Maratha Nationalism, Tamil Nationalism, Bodo Nationalism, Naga Nationalism etc. Then is Nationalism such a meagre term?   [That’s why I had put the flags of nations above, See in Europe how small nations are; each of the european nations have specific linguistic, historical, cultural  of their own. Isn’t the whole of europe smaller than India?, So do the european definition of NATION apply to us? ]

Is there any space for INDIAN NATIONALISM  then ? So what does it mean by Indian Nationalism? As all of us have been listening & even telling repeatedly ‘UNITY  in DIVERSITY’. That is what defines Indian Nationalism and also the very basis of Indian State. Without the Diversity India would be fragmented and go back to the Pre-Mughal era. Every state has a distinct culture even there are specific cultural regions within states, so if we divide India in the name of identities there will be no India.

Nationalists are those who try for up keeping of unity and long for betterment of their nation. A nationalist need not defend the borders but his/her all deeds should reflect his/her commitment towards the maintenance of unity of the nation and further growth.

So those people who name themselves as Nationalists but try to harm the spirit of Indian Nationalism are true nationalists? Certainly not(I think so,don’t know about others’ feelings) If someone asks me what do I mean of harming the spirit of nation, I would like to list some of such acts:

  1. trying to force a common national language of India(We don’t have one & Hindi is the official language of govt of India)
  2. who discriminate between peoples of different corners of our country(Biharis in Mumbai and Northeastern people in Delhi; and many still call the northeast people as Nepali or chinese)
  3. who discriminate between religion, caste and sex(caste based quota is a problem right but do people of higher castes respect the lower castes as equals?, so isn’t the quota system just a compensation? )
  4. who practices corruption(everyone practices corruption in some manner or the other; sometimes we try to get benefits due to our contacts, isn’t a soft corruption? )
  5. who uses money & other means to buy votes, by stabbing the democracy from the back.
  6. who avoids to do one’s duty(everyone in their respective responsibilities)

Such list is an never ending one. Just saluting National flag, respecting national anthem is not enough; these are actually covers to hide anti-national activities(most of the times, though I never doubt their true respect for the nation). How could I/we term them NATIONALISTS, who don’t respect the idea of INDIA? So next time on the IDEA OF INDIA.

until then

CONTRADICTIONS

CONTRADICTION:

So what is contradiction?

Is it what dictionary tells us only? Where does it live/happen? Is it local or global? Is it political or apolitical? Is it inner or outer theory? Is it theoretical or practical?

Many such questions might arise, when we seek the answer to these questions the answer that come to our mind itself becomes contradictory.

Hmm, to make it simple; Contradiction means having atleast two different answers/paths to the same question. Here I am going to explain contradictions in some specific contemporary situations that somehow and somewhat affect our lives.

  1. RELIGIONS vs BORDERS:

Is it a strange combination? May be, but if we look around we can find religions have become the cause, motivation and even licenses for conflicts. Conflicts of lesser or higher magnitude. Be it the Anti-semitism during NAZI germany, or the ongoing islamic terrorisms or the Anti-Sikh riots. Buddhism, which is considered as  the most peaceful religion, is not far behind; the oppression of Rohingyas in Myanmar is still ongoing. So, How can we say that religion brings PEACE?

Borders, yes borders as the uniting factors! Strange?  Of course not. See though it border divides two political entities still (sometimes) it works as the uniting factor for people of one side (at the cost of hate against other). Examples? How can one forget about INDIA & PAKISTAN.

2. LEADERS vs MEDIA

Does is seem interesting? Nope, everyone knows about this. Still I would like to put my point of view. LEADERS are the species of human beings who lead the common men. Right? Does this happen today? No these days leaders have become somewhat like herders and common men as cattle. Leaders just herd the people, don’t even try to lead from front. They don’t say it is good or bad just go as per the flow.

Media has filled the vacuum. Now media makes opinion. IS this the role of media? Though some will disagree but media is to inform us about the happenings not making opinions for us.

3.  INTROVERTS vs EXTROVERTS

Extroverts are outgoing sociable persons. Generally talk a lot and Introverts are reserved. But, but what? Nothing. Introverts have a lot of ideas inside their mind which they don’t(or couldn’t) channelize but Extroverts have less ideas, they are mostly out spoken.

4.  PEACE vs WAR

“All we want is give peace a chance” : Jhon Lenon.

How to give peace a chance? When we are defining peace & war wrongly. WARs are being fought in the name of peace! Has ever any war brought peace?  Wars only bring destruction, misery. PEACE is both the seed & tree(or egg & hen); peace only brings peace.

Take the example of Indian Independence movement we got independence through peace(though some conflicts and violences were there) & it is the basis of our unity. But in case of  state which has come out of conflict, their remains always the possibility of another uprising against the government. The examples are many.

As Our PM Narendra Modi said we should fight against poverty, against hunger, against discriminations, against hatred. Then it would be the War that will bring peace.

5.  NATIONALISTS vs ?

Nationalists vs “?”; who could be the “?”, anyone. So it is better to say Nationalists vs Others. I have to say a lot about nationalism and nationalists and a lot of anger, & frustration to release, hence it would be better if I write about it in my next post.

Until then
